Kremlin Confirms Trilateral Format for Russia, Ukraine Talks

(MENAFN) The Kremlin clarified on Friday that the forthcoming peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Geneva, Switzerland, will proceed exclusively in a trilateral arrangement, deliberately excluding any European participants.

"No, it's only a trilateral format, meaning Russia, America, and Ukraine. There won't be any Europeans there," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a briefing, rejecting the possibility of involvement from the EU or other international organizations.

The discussions, slated for Feb. 17-18, were earlier confirmed by Peskov as the next phase in a mediation effort facilitated by Washington. He further noted that Russia's delegation at the talks will be headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky.

Earlier on Friday, Peskov affirmed that an agreement had been reached to convene the next round of peace talks "next week," though he refrained from providing additional specifics.

Russia and Ukraine previously conducted two rounds of US-mediated negotiations in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, in January and earlier this month. These talks resulted in the first prisoner exchange of the war in five months.

Talks for a new negotiation session have been in discussion since the latest meetings on Feb. 4-5. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated they are expected to occur on Feb. 17-18, according to remarks he made to a news agency published on Wednesday.
